History

Formed in 1925 we are a registered Charity and have received no statutory funding having to rely on donations, legacies and investment income. The Charity is now embarking on more structured fundraising to support plans for future expansion of its services.
From the 20’s through to the 50’s the services provided included home teaching, social centres, a domiciliary medical attendance scheme, a residential holiday home and during the Second World War the Charity assisted blind evacuees to Devon.

The records show that the Home Teachers were equipped with transport for their job: “Two new Austin 8 cars have been delivered for the use of Home Teachers, and are proving satisfactory. During the terrible weather conditions of the early part of 1947 the Home Teachers were often unable to travel by road, but many perilous journeys were undertaken. In spite of the appalling conditions during this period, the number of visits paid during the year was 12,910.  364 lessons were given.”

Since then the Charity has opened a resource centre at Station House which has recently been expanded which sells a wide range of equipment designed to enable people with sight problems to live independently. Other services offered are group activities, low vision clinics, voluntary visiting service, grants, clubs, magazine and talks and training. Details of these can be found on this website.
